4.0 out of 5 stars Best "wake-up station" on the market but falls short of "personal internet viewer" title, May 4, 2010

UPDATED: Sony has released a software update that rolled out in the first week of June 2010. I've edited the review below to identify issues resolved in the software update. I have noticed some freeze-ups since the software update, but they've been relatively infrequent. If you buy the device new now, it will update itself as soon as it connects to the internet.

The Sony Dash is marketed as a "personal internet viewer." In my opinion, it does not live up to that name. Others are more accurately calling it "glimpse internet" and "upgraded alarm clock." It's a 7-inch touch tablet designed with a weighted wedge style, meant to sit on a countertop or bedside table. Sony basically licensed or bought the Chumby OS and added its own internet video service as well as re-designing the UI a bit for the larger screen. I was attracted to this device because I liked the idea of a Chumby, but it seemed overly bulky and too small of a screen. The Dash takes all the good parts... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars It Has Potential, April 30, 2010

I've been wanting something like this for my living room for a long time as I refuse to hang a clock on the wall or use a clunky looking alarm clock. It's a beautiful little gadget with nice clean lines and is exactly what I wanted in terms of form factor.

It's easy enough to get going; just plug it in and use the wizard to connect it to your wireless 802.11 b/g network. The only part about the setup I didn't like is that you need to register it on Sony's website to activate and manage the "channels" and apps. The website definitely needs some work and is awkward at best, and after registering my Dash and adding some apps, I had to power-cycle the Dash before it synchronized and my apps became available.

Regarding the hardware, it's a gorgeous little gadget but a little short of perfection. The touch screen lacks the responsiveness of modern smartphone screens (which is what most of us will compare the screen to). I'm also slightly bummed at the resolution;... Read more

The Dash hardware is nice. It has a bright screen, a nice look, reasonable speakers, and a reasonably quick processor.

But the software. Ugh.

The software reeks of beta software. Lots of features are missing, even ones they advertise in the boot up video on the device! The USB port doesn't work for anything, the device can't display traffic, and the alarm functions are very basic. It has an auto-dim sensor, but the software for that is broken. It's advertised as an "ultimate alarm clock," but what advanced alarm clock only allows 5 minute snooze periods and requires you to press at bunch of buttons before you go to bed each night?

Above all of that, the UI is terribly slow. Button presses take a second to register, which is infuriating and makes no sense on something with a 500MHz processor.

Sony is promising updates to the unit, but I spoke to a Sony customer service specialist today, and they stated that Sony doesn't publish feature lists... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Bounty Hunter Tracker IV - No Experience Necessary, February 13, 2002

This review is from: Bounty Hunter TK4 Tracker IV Metal Detector (Lawn & Patio)
I figured that any metal detector would find the '32 Chevy buried in my backyard, but I wanted to find coins, rings, and Civil War relics in my 5 acre woods. It took 5 minutes to assemble the Tracker IV and about 15 minutes to review the instruction manual. Round up a few coins, a gold ring, and some nails and run through the demonstration on page 5 of the manual. It will give you an idea of how different objects respond to the 3 detection modes.

I borrowed my wife's headphones (highly recommended) and headed for the woods. Within minutes I found beer cans, shotgun shells, nails. The detector will pinpoint an object close enough that you can dig it up with a few scoops of a garden trowel. On my second attempt I found a man's silver ring.

Tracker IV appears to be well constructed and a good value. I don't have any experience with other detectors, but I can't imagine that any are easier to use than this one. Tracker IV is a great choice for your kids to use, if they can get... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Easy to Use, May 9, 2001
"bytenplace" (Centennial, CO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bounty Hunter TK4 Tracker IV Metal Detector (Lawn & Patio)
The Bounty Hunter was exactly what I was looking for. My 11 year old son and I wanted to expore metal detecting together. I didn't want to invest a large amount of money in something that was too high tech or that he would lose interest in. I didn't want to spend too little and get a cheap product. This item was priced right and so far has proven to be a quality item. It was easy to assemble (maybe 5 minutes), takes 2 standard 9 volt batteries and is lightweight enough for my 11 year old to handle with ease. The shaft adjusts in height so when I finally get my turn, I can adjust it to fit me.

We are having a ball so far with it. We haven't found any high dollar finds yet, but the neighborhood kids have gone with us the last few days and made it a fun treasure hunt. In our search of a couple vacant lots, we have found 17 cents, lots of nails, an old bottle cap, a saw blade and other misc items. We plan on taking this into the mountains soon, as it is waterproof so you can... Read more

When I started researching metal detectors before buying one for my husband, I was overwhelmed with all the reviews, ads, etc., I found on the internet. I printed out all the information that seemed to have a "voice of authority" behind it; it wasn't long before one brand/model seemed to take first place as the best choice for units under $300. Reviews from novices to experts concurred that the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV was a great buy as well as a great metal detector for novice to intermediate users. My husband is not someone who reads the instructions before using anything, but I showed him some of the printouts that warned against trying to use any metal detector without getting familiar with the instruction booklet first (because if you don't know what you're doing, you'll be frustrated and decide the detector doesn't work right). For once, he did spend time reading the instructions and then practicing with the detector as the directions advised. It wasn't long before he was... Read more

These people giving bad reviews gotta rethink their value system. Just like a micro 10 cent pen won't be as good as a full sized 2 dollar one, the same holds true for radios.

There are only a few useful radios on the market this tiny, with a built in speaker (as opposed to headphone/earbuds - only radios). Out of the ones this tiny I found the CX-50 beat the others of similar size & price.

I bought mine for about 5 bucks, liked it so much, I ordered 3 more as stocking stuffers. For the price & size, I thought it was a good deal.

This isn't a serious performer. It's more like a micro travel radio or travel alarm clock (Yes it has an alarm clock in it).

It's stylish too. A cross between modern & retro, with an all metal face. It solid & heavy compared to most mini radios.

Sound quality is about what one would expect from such a little speaker... you won't get much bass, but the included earbuds sound rich & full.

It... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Looking TINY Retro Radio, October 28, 2009
This review is from: Coby CX50 Compact AM/FM Radio with Digital Display, silver (Electronics)
There's a lot to like about this radio, especially if you can find it for $5.99 like I did. I was looking for a small pocket radio that would unobtrusively fit in a shirt pocket and had decent AM reception. None of my mp3 or media players have AM, only FM. I purchased the Grundig "Buzz Aldrin" G6 to fill this void. I love that radio, however it was ill-suited to carrying in one's pocket. It DID fit in the large pockets on my cargo shorts, however, the jog dial came off a few times...luckily I found it in my pocket and easily snapped it into place, but if I'd lost it, the radio would be worthless! It does come with a carrying case, but that made it even bulkier to walk around with. Furthermore, I didn't want it to get banged around in my pocket with all the jostling and jockeying for position that happens on the subway here every day.
I'd seen this Coby cx-50 on Amazon for awhile and really liked the looks. When I saw it last week in a downtown electronics retailer for... Read more

I'm a D.I.Y ( Do It Yourself)er I wanted a tiny cheap radio with a integrated speaker. As a D.I.Y, I work around my home as I do others as well. When I work on power outlets etc. I turn the brecker off. I use this(everything goes better with a radio). When I get a call for help this is in my tool bag and just the right amount of volume not to bug anyone. I never used the head phones can't review that part sorry but if your looking for a tiny cheap radio this could be the one your looking for.

It is also an alarm clock. If a poweroutage happen this is great. It will wake you up (Im a dead sleeper).
